2008 Carrera Avon

On Sunday, March 9th in Guatemala City, a friend of mine and myself participated in this event. There were over 3,000 women and children running theses races, most of them walked the 5K and about half actually ran the 5K and/or 10K.

The Avon Race in Guatemala is a special program that drives the woman to exercise, and to have a very healthful life. It is realized in the month of March, to make a tribute to the woman in the Day the International of the Woman Avon Central America sponsors a 5K or 10K only for women. The Avon Race is part of the program “Caminasta Around the World”, which fight to eradicate the cancer in the Woman.

Being that it was in Guatemala City and we live in Antigua, we had to start pretty early in the morning, 6:00 am. When we finally arrived at the Marriott to pick up our packet, all we could see was a "sea of pink". Most everyone were wearing their pink t-shirt. There were balloons everywhere and it seemed that the women were taking over the city. Once we got to the starting line, which totally reminded me of a 5K race that I participated in St. Pete, Florida, a large stage with more pink balloons and music playing, women and children everywhere. It was really cool to see, husbands and fathers out supporting their families in an event that raises money breast cancer research.

The race started at the Oblisco, down Reforma, a 4 lane road with trees in the median. The morning air was just perfect with a little breeze and some shade made the run a little easier.

Once I got through the first kilometer, I finally got into a running groove and ended my time for a 10K (6.2 miles) at 55 minutes. My friend, Nan came in at 54 minutes. Once we got our goodie bag, which consisted of products from Avon, we made our way back home to Antigua. I needed to be at church by the start of the service. It was a good day!!! Can't wait for next year to participate in it again.
