The last 6 months worth of training had finally come for the 14th Maya Marothon. So on Sunday, October 5th, Jessica, Tami, Manolo, and Tom, oh and Matt (our massage therapist) arrived early in Amatitlan. With nervous butterflies in our stomachs, we manage to group our thoughts and begin this major event. Approximately 1500 runners participated. After a long national athem, the race finally began, 15 minutes late.As we rounded the bend..... this is what we saw, Lake Amatitlan, what an awesome sight!! The magnificence of God was shown that day.
As we saw the beauty of God, we also were able to see how God had changed one of our own runner's life right in front of us. At the beginning of this year, Manolo was battling drugs and alcohol and he had been in a recovering program several times. It was about 2 months or so ago, he began running with us "girls" for just something to do. He was faithful every week to show up and run. He had a specific job....."Protect My Ladies" which is what he did. Whenever there was any danger.....stray dogs....he would protect us!! On one of our long runs, we talked him into

I'm hoping you'll get this via email. I live in Mexico (QRoo) and am thinking of making this marathon my first one. Can you tell me how hilly the ruta is? I see it goes by a lake the whole way and should be scenic, but we live in flats (Yucatan peninsula) and are not used to altitude. Any idea of the hill factor? Thanks in advance!
